# Desktop Crawler vs Cloud Crawler vs CLI Crawler: Which Fits Your Workflow

By [Seth Black](https://www.blackseoanalyzer.com/en/about) · Published November 01, 2026

A desktop crawler runs on your computer, is priced per user, and is limited by your machine; a cloud crawler runs on the vendor’s servers, is priced by pages or credits, and is shared by a team; a CLI crawler is a crawler you run from a terminal, so it can go in a script, a cron job or a CI pipeline. Pick desktop for hands-on audits, cloud for scheduled monitoring and shared reports across a team, and CLI when crawling is a step in something automated. Several tools are more than one of these.

Vendor prices and limits below were checked on 31 October 2026 on the pages linked.

## What is the difference between desktop, cloud and CLI crawlers?

| | Desktop | Cloud | CLI |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Where it runs | Your computer | Vendor’s servers | Anywhere with a terminal: laptop, server, CI runner |
| What limits crawl size | Your RAM and disk | Your plan’s page or credit quota | The machine it runs on |
| Pricing model | Per user, yearly or one-time | Per month, by pages, credits or projects | Usually the same license as the desktop app |
| Who sees results | Whoever has the file | Everyone on the account | Whatever you pipe the output into |
| Scheduling | Some tools, local only | Built in | cron, CI, or any scheduler you already have |
| Crawls from | Your IP | Vendor’s IPs | Wherever you run it |
| Data ownership | Local files | Vendor platform | Local files |

## What do the main crawlers in each category cost?

| Tool | Type | Entry price | Crawl limit at entry |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Desktop, with CLI | $279 per user per year | “Unlimited”, dependent on memory and storage; free version 500 URLs |
| Sitebulb | Desktop or cloud | Lite, $18/month (last verified 16 September 2026) | 10,000 URLs per audit |
| Semrush Site Audit | Cloud | SEO plan, $139/month | 100,000 pages/month, 20,000 per audit (help center “Pro” limits) |
| Ahrefs Site Audit | Cloud | Lite, $129/month | 100,000 crawl credits/month |
| SE Ranking Website Audit | Cloud | Core, $129/month | 250,000 pages/month |
| Lumar, Oncrawl | Cloud, enterprise | Quote only | Not published |
| bseoa | Desktop and CLI | $279 one-time | No limit |

## When is a desktop crawler the right choice?

When one person does hands-on audits and wants to poke at the data. A desktop crawler lets you change a setting and recrawl in seconds, filter results in a table, and keep client data off third-party platforms. It costs the same whether you crawl 500 pages or 5 million, which is why agencies auditing many sites usually end up here.

The limits are real, though. A crawl of several million URLs needs a machine with a lot of memory. Results live in a file, so sharing means exporting. And nothing runs while your laptop is closed.

## When is a cloud crawler the right choice?

When a team needs the same data, on a schedule, without anyone keeping a machine running. Semrush and Ahrefs bundle a cloud audit with keyword and backlink data you may already pay for. Enterprise platforms like Lumar and Oncrawl add log analysis, monitoring and, in Lumar’s case, pre-release testing in a CI/CD pipeline.

You pay for that in quotas. Semrush caps a single audit at 20,000 pages below its top tier; Ahrefs counts credits per 200 OK page; Oncrawl charges 3 tokens per rendered URL. On a big site, crawl frequency becomes a budget decision.

## When do you need a CLI crawler?

When a crawl should happen without a person starting it. Common cases:

- **Pre-deploy checks.** Crawl a staging site in CI and fail the build if the release adds broken links or noindexes pages.
- **Nightly crawls.** A cron job on a server crawls the site and drops a JSON or CSV file where a dashboard or script picks it up.
- **Feeding other tools.** Pipe crawl output into `jq`, a database, a notebook, or an AI assistant.
- **Servers without a desktop.** Crawl from a Linux box close to the site.

Screaming Frog has a command line mode, and its user guide describes headless runs for scheduled exports; its setup asks for your license key in a file. bseoa’s CLI comes with the same license as its GUI and does the same work; `--rate-limit` is the delay between requests in milliseconds. A nightly crawl looks like this:

```bash
# crontab: crawl at 03:00, keep a dated JSON export
0 3 * * * black-seo-analyzer --url-to-begin-crawl https://example.com --max-pages 50000 --rate-limit 200 --output-type json --output-file /var/crawls/$(date +\%F).json
```

Every bseoa crawl is also stored in a local SQLite database, so you can export again later or compare two crawls to see what a release changed. The [CLI documentation](https://www.blackseoanalyzer.com/en/cli-documentation) lists every flag and output type, and [an SEO audit CLI for developers](https://www.blackseoanalyzer.com/en/blog/seo-audit-cli-for-developers) walks through using it in a pipeline.

## Can one tool cover more than one category?

Yes, and that’s often the practical answer.

| Tool | Desktop | Cloud | CLI |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Screaming Frog | Yes | No | Yes |
| Sitebulb | Yes | Yes | Not verified for this post |
| Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking | No | Yes | No |
| Lumar, Oncrawl | No | Yes | API |
| bseoa | Yes | Hosted connector for Claude and ChatGPT (no JavaScript rendering) | Yes |

bseoa’s hosted connector is a cloud crawler you drive from an AI assistant rather than a dashboard: 25,000 crawled pages per rolling 30 days, 2,000 per crawl, from $15 a month with a license. Details are on the [connector page](https://www.blackseoanalyzer.com/en/mcp). For rendered crawls and unlimited pages, use the desktop app or CLI.

## Which should you pick?

- **Freelancer or agency auditing sites by hand:** desktop.
- **In-house team wanting weekly reports everyone can open:** cloud, probably the one bundled with your keyword tool.
- **Enterprise site with logs and many stakeholders:** an enterprise cloud platform.
- **Developer or technical SEO automating checks:** CLI.

If you want desktop and CLI in one license, bseoa is $279 once for Windows, macOS and Linux, renders JavaScript with headless Chrome, and has no page limit. It has no built-in scheduler, no log analysis and no backlink data; cron and CI do the scheduling. Try the CLI with the [14-day trial](https://www.blackseoanalyzer.com/en/free-trial), which has every feature.
